AJWINDMILLS TOP TENS

THAYRES SELECTION

James has sent his Top Ten which is a follows:

1. Born in the fifties to old fashioned parents I was brought up on a diet of Billy Cotton and Mantovani so when Rock n Roll came along it was like a visitation from aliens hehehehe. Although there were lots of American artists about the first Brit I can remember being in the charts was my first record by Tommy Steele singing Talahassie Lassie.
This record entered the charts on the 14th August 1959 and got to number 16 and only stayed for 4 weeks. His first number one was "Singing the Blues" in 1956.

2. My second choice has to be by The Rolling Stones. It was a dark period in my life. My Father had just died and I ran wild.........had no direction and I hurt a lot of nice people. It was a time now best forgotten so the song is called I want a Witness.
This record never reached the charts but there first number one was "It's all over now" in 1964 and stayed there for 15 weeks.

3. My third choice has to be The Beatles. My bestest mate worked for Brian Epstein (Nems Enterprises) in their offices next door to The London Palladium so I was an original groupie and met just about every star in the 60's and 70's. This period of my life was much better but I was still a wrong'un and still doing daft things. This record is called Rain
Again this record never made the charts but there first hit in 1963 was called "From me to you" and stayed in the charts for a massive 21 weeks.

4. My fourth choice is called Louie Louie and its by The Kingsmen. All the bands played it and all the music stations played it (Pirate radio) and I predicted it would be a number 1 smash hit. It never even made the charts hehehehehe.
This record did make the charts. It came in on the 30th January 1964 and got to number 26 and stayed within the charts for 7 weeks.

5. My fifth choice is Heatwave by Martha Reeves & The Vandellas. My bestest mate had formed a band and this was their warm up/intro number. I'm now having a seriously wild time getting more and more out control and into all sorts of naughty things.
This was never a chart hit but their biggest hit was called "Dancing in the Street" which got to number 4 and stayed in the charts for 12 weeks.

6. My sixth choice is Smokestack Lightning by Howling Wolf. It was at this time when I discovered my love for Blues music and this record was just an example of the wide range of Blues that I still like today.
This came into the charts on the 4th June 1964 and only reached number 42 and stayed for 5 weeks.

7. My seventh choice is Hi Ho Silver Lining by Jeff Beck. It marks a complete character change for me. I had realised where I was going. I had looked inwards and didn't like what I saw. This record was the top tune of that time and probably saved my life....and yes you've guessed, there was a woman involved heheheheheheh.
This came into the charts on the 23rd March 1967 and got to number 14 and stayed there for 14 weeks. It came out again on the 4th November 1972 and got to number 17 and stayed for 11 weeks and then again on the 9th October 1982 it came in again.

8. My eighth is a very odd choice. My son and I were seriously ill having salmonella poisoning. I had been exploding for a week hadn't eaten and was just laying in bed waiting to die(hadn't yet been diagnosed). My wife came and told me about Diana and Dodi. When my wife came to see me later I told her that I had had a strange dream about Diana and Dodi being killed. I was so ill I was hallucinating. Once they found what was wrong with me the cure was very rapid and the first meal I ate for nearly two weeks was boiled haddock which I ate with my tray on my lap whilst watching the funeral on the tele. The music that they plated as the coffin was taken away still haunts me (not Candle in the Wind). I think it was by Kavana but its a very serious piece.
After as lot of hard work and asking friends both on and off the net I have found out that the music was done by John Tavener and sung by the choir and it was Hamlet & the Orthodox service. Thanks to all that helped with that (AJ).

My ninth choice is Sheryl Crow called Every Day is a Winding Road. It really shows the type of music that I like now. It's got a beat. It's got guitars. It's happy. Sheryl Crow was dating Eric Clapton at the time and his influence is in this record.
This entered the charts on the 30th November 1996 and reached its highest place of number 12 and stayed for 6 weeks.

THAYRES NUMBER TEN

My tenth choice is the SENIOR NETIZENS CHATROOM. I have met so many nice peeps on line and I have met bus loads in the flesh and they have all sent wavs or appeared on AJ's page which has given me a vast scope of music. If any of you are still awake by the time you get this far I would like to say thanks to you all for being there. You are a family to me. I must thank AJWINDMILL for setting this up. It must take him ages to do. A special thanks to OLLY77088 cos without her I would still be hitting all the wrong buttons (yup, she's taught me a lot) hehehehehehehe....she has a special place in my heart.
